Talks on Portuguese pork exports to China due to wrap up in July

Portuguese Secretary of State for Agriculture and Food Luís Vieira has said he expects negotiations about exporting Portuguese pork to China to be completed next month, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency quotes Mr. Vieira as saying a party of senior Chinese officials will visit Portugal next month with a view to completing the talks. The report says Mr. Vieira was speaking at a conference of the Portuguese pig farming industry in the Portuguese municipality of Cartaxo.

Portuguese Federation of Pig Farming Associations President Vítor Menino, also speaking at the conference, said the opening of the Chinese market for pork would breathe new life into Portuguese pig farms.

“The potential of the Chinese market is such that it could absorb all domestic production,” Lusa quotes Mr. Menino as saying.
