TAP says start of Lisbon-Xi’an-Beijing flights imminent

TAP Chairman Miguel Frasquilho has said a return air service between Lisbon and Beijing via the central Chinese city of Xi’an will begin next month or in March, Jornal Económico reports.

The Portuguese newspaper says the Portuguese airline will sell seats on the flights because it has a code-sharing agreement with the operator, Beijing Capital Airlines.

The report quotes Mr Frasquilho as saying TAP is a passive partner in the new service.

He said, quoting Beijing Capital Airlines, that a previous return service between Lisbon and Beijing via the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou was unprofitable.

Beijing Capital Airlines began the previous service in 2017 and suspended it last year, giving “operational reasons” as justification, Jornal Económico says.
