Eight international consortia are interested in becoming strategic partners in the construction of the Mpanda-Nkwa dam hydroelectric power station, which is located in central Moçambique, according to Portuguese news agency Lusa.
The eight consortia responded to the tender launched in December, submiting the pre-qualification documents within the deadline (last Monday), two of which are Chinese companies: Longyuan Power and PowerChina.
The infrastructure is budgeted at a value between 4.5 and five billion dollars with a capacity to produce 1,500 megawatts. It will make Mphanda Nkuwa the second largest hydroelectric power plant of Mozambique, only after Cahora Bassa hydroelectric scheme, which generates 2,070 megawatts.
