Xi Jinping gives undertaking to persist with economic reform

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said his country will persist with economic reform and opening its markets wider.

In a New Year message broadcast by government-run television network CCTV, Mr Xi said China marked the 40th year since it began reforming its economy and opening its markets by taking further reform measures and beginning a comprehensive, systematic overhaul of state and the Chinese Communist Party institutions.

“The world has seen China’s accelerating reform and opening-up, and its determination to carry it forward,” Mr Xi said. “China’s reforms will never stop, and its doors will only open ever wider.”

China would press on with its Belt and Road Initiative this year, and keep calling for the people of the world to act together to shape their common destiny, the president said.
