Chinese company bags contract to build East Timor harbour

French transport company Bolloré will give China Harbour Engineering Co. Ltd the contract to build the Tibar harbour in East Timor, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency, quoting unidentified sources, says the new harbour will be on the outskirts of the capital, Dili, and that it will have the capacity to handle 226,000 containers a year to begin with.

The report says the US$400 million harbour is a project undertaken jointly by the East Timorese government, Bolloré and the International Finance Corporation, an arm of the World Bank.

The facility is due to open by 2019, but no date has been set for the start of construction work, Lusa says.
