Chinese teaching Mozambicans modern way to grow rice

Chinese enterprises have introduced to Mozambique advanced techniques for growing rice, the China Economic Daily reports.

The Chinese state-run newspaper quotes an official of the Mozambican Ministry of Agriculture, Pedro Dzucule, as saying during a visit to Beijing that the new methods have increased the yield of rice in the Mozambican province of Gaza to 7 tonnes per hectare planted from 2 or 3 tonnes per hectare.

Mr Dzucule said rice is a staple in Mozambique, but that the country has to import 370,000 tonnes a year, even though it has 300,000 hectares that could be planted with rice.

Chinese enterprises in Mozambique can improve rice-farming there by investing in agricultural machinery and in processing the grain, the China Economic Daily quotes the official as saying.
